Types of E-mail Accounts

There are two primary methods utilized when creating e-mail accounts:

  • A "real" e-mail account which can be accessed via software on your computer and your web site's webmail interface, located at domain.tld/webmail. This typically looks like name@domain.com. As this is a real e-mail account a password is required to access it.
  • A "forward" e-mail address simply accepts e-mail at a web site and then transparently forwards it to a real e-mail address. It can not be logged into and it does not store messages anywhere on the server once the e-mail ahs been processed and sent.

It is also possible to combine these, by creating a real account to be accessed and logged into while creating forwards to that account.  This is primarily done for the purpose of receiving e-mail even though multiple methods exist to spell a person's name, such as: shawn, shaun, sean, or vickie, viki, vicky, vicki, etc. A real account can be created with the correct spelling while the others can be established as forwards to the real account. Forwards can point to any active e-mail account in the world.

Organizations can also benefit from forwards, especially those with transitioning member positions. Many of our clients choose to create forwards of their various positions and have those point to real addresses.  The allows the sales@domain.tld to be moved from one "employee" to another, while keeping a consistent "sales" e-mail address on the web site. In these situations, it is completely possible to create a president@organization.com forward to realname@organization.tld or even realname@gmail.com.
